The elephant ear philodendron (Philodendron domesticum) is a beautiful and decorative plant whether kept indoors or out. It's stately and unique spade-shaped smooth green leaves can grow up to 18 to 24 inches. This plants spreads horizontally to up to 2 to 3 feet in width. During a well documented experiment by NASA, the elephant ear philodendron was found to be amongst some of the plants who perform best as air fresheners. This plant eats up harmful gases and other pollutants in the air and refreshes the over all air quality of where ever it is placed.
Elephant ear philodendrons is the most low maintenance house plant around. They can survive easily in room temperature and indoor light, in fact they will respond positively to artificial light as well. However, placing them in direct sunlight or may be outdoors can reduce their life span drastically.
Elephant ear philodendrons should have their soil lightly moistened but not overly wet, so make sure that the pot holding this plant is well drained. Keep its environment humid and watch it grow lush green and healthy, this makes them the ideal plant to be kept in bathrooms and kitchens. However, be careful that if salt like deposits are visible in the soil the plant will need to be re-potted into a new pot with clean soil.
Elephant ear is fully capable of climbing walls and stands so planting them outside in a shady spot will definitely see them flourishing. It will easily tolerate the early morning sun but a glaring mid day sun will surely kill it, so choose a shaded area to plant the philodendrons. The frost too can hamper its growth, but the plant will re-grow from its roots agin on its own. Normally elephant's ear philodendrons don't need much to grow; you only have to fertilize them twice annually with a time release fertilizer.
